What is a domain?

Learn what “domain” means in plain words.

Domain

The address of your website, for example yourcompany.com. You buy it for a year or longer from a company that sells domains (a registrar).

What is a domain made of?

A name you choose (for example yourcompany) and an ending such as .com, .net or .org. The same domain works for your website and your email, for example hello@yourcompany.com.

What should you watch out for?

A domain has to be renewed, usually every year. If it expires, your website and email stop working, and after a while someone else can buy the domain. It is best to have it registered in your company’s name.
